Stained Glass or Leaded Glass?

The term "stained glass" refers to the act of applying lead based paints to glass and firing it in a kiln. So why is this not called "leaded glass"? Actually leaded glass can contain segments of stained glass or may be clear glass altogether. A common use for the term "leaded glass" is when used to describe leaded beveled glass windows.
Stained glass is also used to broadly describe colored glass held together with copper, solder and or lead. This use of the word is most commonly used by the general public when used in reference to a stained glass window or Tiffany style lamps.
